Research : Genre

 Big research x2

Here are some texts that I will look at a little more broadly to see how they appeal to audiences and how they can inspire me.

Name: The Batman

Year: 2021

Produced by: Warner Bros Pictures

1. Genre/Sub-Genre: Action/Crime, his movie is a hybrid genre which mixes sci-fi, and superhero noirs,  and detectives

2. What conventions does it conform to?
the media text conforms the crime genre as in adding detectives in the movie and polices and the mysterious characters with a mask covering their whole face like the villain in this batman movie. This is a hermeneutic code, because the identity of the villain is concealed, which often happens at the beginning of crime movies. The opening also shows a lioent murder, another convention of crime films. The weapon used (mine-en-scene) is a blunt object, making the attack seem more disturbing. The camera angle used in this scene is a low angle shot, showing the attacker in a powerful pose and hiding the actual contact with the victim. it makes the audience think the villain

3.  What conventions does it subvert?
The media text subverts to the crime genre as in having 3d technologies and and Digital Touch screen which does not conform to the crime genre

4. What representations are there?
this movie had superheroes which is batman and cat woman and the also show criminals and pedestrians and this movie also portrays the city night life with bright colors, they also showed fancy old looking palace with an underground place with batman's suit and modern technologies.

5. What technical elements are used to give meaning to the representations?
The vigilante (batman) uses suit that has scratches or battle scars which shows that batman has been in many fights, and in the movie in one scene he takes of his helmet and it shows his pale face and black particles around his eyes which shows that he is sleep deprived because of fighting crimes everyday. Misenscene and the victim is playing with his children and it will impact the audiences making them feel bad about the villain killing the father with a baby.

Name: Good Fellas

Year: 1990

1. Genre/Sub-genre
Crime/Thriller, this movie specifically focuses on the crimes guns and gangsters

2. What media text does it conform to?
this media text conforms to the crime as in adding scenes where they sneak in people in the cab of a car and start stabbing them violently and also shooting them multiple times, and because the criminal or gangsters such as the good fellas are wearing fancy suits and tuxedos, this is a hermeunatic code, because usually mafia and criminals wear fancy suits and that is the stereotype of them, in the beginning it also shows the mafias violently stabbing them with blood all over and it makes the scene more disturbing and creepy to look at. This scene was also using blocking because they the mafias were standing up and the guy who got kidnapped was all bloody and weak and powerless.

3. What conventions does it subvert?
the media text subverts to the crime genre as in adding a narrator into the scene which usually does not happen in mafia movies

4. What representations are there?
this movie had mafias with fancy looking suits and a old fashioned car and gangsters just relaxing by the street and this movie only shows adults being mafias.

5. What technical elements are used to give a meaning to the representations?
in one of the scenes the mafias kidnapped a guy with blood all over his body and face and this shows that this guy has been violently attacked by these mafias before. it also shows gangsters just relaxing beside the streets which means they have all the time in world or freedom to do whatever they want to do.

SMALL RESEARCH

Name: The Godfather
Year: 1972

Target Audience and How are they Appealed to?
I would say the target audience for this film is leaning more to the adults because this scene is specifically more talking and no music and all dim and serious talking and i think this focuses on people who are more into the lore of the movie rather than seeing action and fight scenes.

What would you like to use in your opening from this?
My group personally would use the lighting in this movie because our target audience is also adults then we would also add as much dialogue into our movie opening and not too much action so that we would attract the people who are more interested in the story of the movie, we also want to use the attire that this film uses, just like suits and slick backed hair since it would a some kind of mafia adult feeling to it.

What would you like to avoid in your opening from this?
We would like to avoid the place that is set in this movie, rather than sitting at an office we want to bring it to a more eerie abandoned place so that it would make the scene and the audience feel creeped out and uncomfortable. We would also not wanna avoid not adding music because to make the misenscene better we want to add a discordant type of music to add to the creepy and uneasy vibe.

Name: The Irishman
Year: 2019

Target Audience and How are they appealed to?
I would say the target audience is for mature audiences but i cant really tell, nothing really happens in the scene rather than an old mysterious man telling about his life story while a solemnly music plays in the background which gives calm feeling and relaxed situation,  although in the beginning it is like calm and relaxed  i think that the end will end up being pscyhotic and distrubing.

What would you like to use in your opening from this?
My group would wanna use the solemnly music in the background to kind of subvert the our scene and we can use it ina contrapuntal manner so that our audience will feel uncomfortable.

What would you like to avoid in your opening from this?
My group will avoid the place that is used in this film, since in this film it looks innocent bring and family friendly and we would like to avoid that, instead we will film in several locations which will not be bright and family friendly rather it will be dirty and abandoned so it creates a feeling where we are in a mysterious unknown place where no one can find us, we also trying to avoid a single shot where it is only focused on the main character because then it wouldn't be engaging.

Name: L4yer cake
Year: 2004

Target Audience and How are they appealed to?
The target audience for this is adults or mature people because they were selling cocaine and cocaine is not for little kids. the setting is also in a factory where they sell cocaine and jails so this is primarely aimed at adults. This movie also has alot of dialogue and usually mature people loves focusing on the dialogue rather than teenagers or middle aged men they love the action more

What would you like to use in your opening from this?
My group would like to use the how much dialogue is used in this movie as we said we wanted it to be focused on the story. we also wanna use how the main characters are always explained from the start and his lore

What would you like to avoid in your opening from this?
My group wants to avoid going into the action straight away sine we want to build suspense in the scene so that the audience will be more enganged into our movie opening scene. This movie also has alot of narrating, though we wanna avoid that and add more of the actual characters speaking so it would be a diegetic sound.

Name: Resevoir Dogs
Year: 1992

Target Audience and How are they appealed to?
I think the target audience for this movie leans more to the adults since in this specific scene it shows a guy torturing the other guy that is tied up in a chair, this movie also portrays alot of gore so the target audience definitely is for mature people, when this movie is shown to the younger audience they would feel disturbed and this would probably lead to the kid being influenced to the actions in this movie.

What would you like to use in your opening from this?
In this scene me and my group would like to use the setting of the scene since it looks dirty and abandoned which is what our group is aiming for and we would also to include the guy who is torturing attire since it looks somewhat formal.

What would you like to avoid in your opening from this?
In this scene we would like to avoid how much violence and blood is in this movie since we want it to be eerie and disturbing but also not showing too much blood and violence because it goes against the cambridge guidelines. We would also like to avoid the lighting in this scene because what were aiming is a dim not too much light and in this scene it is too bright for us so we would like to avoid that. My group also wants to play a more discordant music to fit in the mood but in this movie it is more to the happy and relaxing song although what we are seeing is psychotic.

Name: Peaky Blinders
Year: 2013

Target Audience and How are they appealed to?
The Target audience for this movie is old people who are in their 50s or 60s because in this movie it shows us a lot of old buildings and historical clothing. this tells us that it is traditional. if it was shown to kids they would be uninterested because they're not really attracted to old buildings and historical clothing. In this opening scene it also doesn't have too much action where kids wont like it more and will most likely get bored of it faster

What would you like to use in your opening from this?
In this film they were using formal attire which we wanna include in movie opening scene, in the ending of the opening scene it also has a non diegetic sound which is a calm jazzy music, we want to include that in our movie opening scene when it reaches to the title to make the audience more engaged on what happened after.

What would you like to avoid in your opening from this?
My group would like to avoid the historical buildings that is shown in this movie and rather have more modern but abandoned buildings and not historical, the reason for this is usually mafia movies does not have horses and historical buildings so my group just wants to conform to every other mafia movies out there

Name: Bad Boys
Year 2024

Target Audience and How are they appealed to?
the target audience for this movie leans more to the people who love action comedies because in this movie they have fast cars and speeding through the cities and they also played some hip hop upbeat music which also makes the target audience teenagers since they are more attracted to this stuff.

What would you like to use in your opening from this?
We would like to use their choice of attire in this scene because they are wearing suits, which will fit our mafia style and vibe. and we would also like to use the guns that are shown in this movie but we would like it to be smaller and something like a old handgun to fit the the rich mafia vibe.

What would you like to avoid in your opening from this?
There are loads of things that we want to avoid in our movie opening scene which is first the bright colored city and setting, obviously we wouldnt want that because it will ruin the mise en scene of our movie opening since we wanted it to be dim and dark and disturbing so it creates an eerie vibe to the audience. we also want to avoid having a comedic scenes in our movie opening since we want to aim for a more suspense vibe so we would have to avoid that. the last one we would wanna avoid is the music that is used in the movie, in this movie the music are too upbeat and party like and exciting and it wouldn't fit into our opening scene

here is some videos that can help me in my project movie opening scene

Reflection: This research helped us to decide our target audience for the film opening scene and it also helped us to know what we want in our film and what we want to avoid in our film opening scene.

Research : Audience

Research : Industry

 This is my research industry

What genre am I working in? Crime/Drama

Do I want my film video to be niche or mainstream? My group and I are debating if we should pick mainstream or niche, because if we were to pick mainstream the expectations from the audience woul be higher when it comes to our quality of the film and the dialogues and how the actors act, but if we choose niche it will restrict our creativity because we would have to follow their film style

What company would most likely produce my media text in the real world? Lionsgate, because my group is aiming for the media text that lionsgate produce such as American psycho.

What other content do they produce? they produce movies such as john wick, power rangers, now you see me these are all action movies and superhero movies.

Weekly Progress + Plan

This is my weekly progress for our new project

Week 1: In this week we learned about the industry in films which is production distribution and exhibition and we also set up a new blog for our new project which is an intro to a film and we also did some research on what genre were going to do in our project.

Week 2: Today I looked at more crime movies and did a research on crime movies and their conventions and what conforms and subverted, but I still haven't wrote down the real technical element s and I haven't done research 2 which I will do at home and watch more crime movies

Week 3 : In depth research and we did general small research to find our influences, we also got feedback form the teacher

Week 4: We did statement of intent on this week, this helped us why we want to do this genre and scenes.

Week 5: Today we did the script and storyboard this helped us to figure out what scenes and what ideas were gonna do in our movie. and we also going to do the screenplay.

Week 6: This week we did all project lesson and we did the storyboard and made a script for our opening scene and we also did a screen test to figure out whos going to be the actor of the movie. We also did statement of intent to figure out our demographic and psychographic and we also did a location scout to film our scenes, im not scared of this and im excited for the next step

Week 7: This week we did the last project lesson to finalize all our blogs and to finish our scripts and storyboards. We also did a exam review for our semestral exams that are coming, honestly i am quite nervous because there is so much to write, but i believe that i can pass media studies

Reflection: weekly progress helped me to track my progress and helped me to remember the things we learned either if its a day ago or a week ago so it makes it really easy for me to put stuff in my head

Week 1:

we created a mini movie clip, we created that in our group to practice our acting

Week 2

In this week we learned about dominant reading oppositional reading and negotional reading, we also learned about how to edit and continuity editing, this can improve our knowledge on our main movie project and this can also make it easier for us to decide who will edit in our group, We also learned a couple new theories such as cultivative theory, desentitaion theory, social learning theory and reception theory.

Week 3:

In this week we learned about 3 theories judith butler laura mulvey van zoonen, and we also learned about reception theory and stuart hall. we also learned dominant reading oppostional reading and lastly negotional reading. we had some clips ready and we already filmed but the problem was the clips were shaky and we might need to record the clips back again which we plan to do it tommorow on friday 24th january

Week 4:

in this week we only had one lesson because of holidays, in this one lesson we did a project lesson about the typeface and searching for the perfect title for our movie and we also created and opening credits for our project.

Week 5:

in this week we have a long holiday and i did all the work at home

Week 6:

we had online classes in this week because of extreme weather but we started to make CCR1 and CCR2, we also started to do audience feedback and created a new blog for it.

Week 7

in this week we started CCR 3 and CCR4, we also have mock exams which made us too busy to study for it until we do not have time do continue our blogs or reshoot some scenes that are no perfect yet

Week 8: this week we did full review and we did 3 mock tests which was suprisingly pretty decent and after the mock test we dicussed about the questions and the right answers

Week 9: this week was very turbulent and everything went downhill quickly between mock tests slc and the project that we failed to meet deadlines, with lackluster presentation, this week was the last week and a few more days until submission, so we now had to focus fully on the fixing

Week 10: THIS WEEK IS THE SUBMISSION WEEK!!!!!, our group locked in and straight up focus fully on this project and we had help from addie to record too since arnold is unavailable
