Location Scout & Risk assesment

this is the locations that we will be recording in and the risks that are involved with when recording this documentary, this was made by kenneth and tisha

Regents Classroom

Location Link:

Regents Secondary School

Events in scene:

School bombing, CCTV footage from the event, Interview

Pros of location:

No outside interruption, protection from weather conditions, has the props that are needed in this documentary (tables, chairs, whiteboard).

Cons of location:

Might be hard to get private access, lightings may be bad as the lights are mostly from the lightbulb only, Students or teachers might walk in while we’re shooting

Alternatives:

There are many classrooms that have adjustable lighting that will match our scene. The school has a lot of classrooms as well so we can switch classes if it's occupied.

Risk Assessment

Potential hazards:

Bags on the floor and chairs +  tables in the way

Evaluate risks:

while shooting actors / during recording we may stumble across the bags and bump into chairs and tables

Control measures:

We’ll shoot after school, so hopefully less students will be around by then. We will also have someone to secure the area before we start shooting so it limits the chances of people to come into the room. We will also clear the space of the tables so it removes the hazards of stumbling over and bumping into things.

Responsibility:

We will have someone take turns or when they are not going to be doing anything during the shoot to stay outside making sure no one will come in, or anyone from outside to be making any loud noises that can be heard until inside the room.

Time frame:

We will have the one who's responsible for their turn to be outside of the classroom before a shoot is happening.

Other notes:

Ask for permission before hand to teacher who was using the classroom so there won't be any disturbance while using the classroom

Documentary Opening 1: (The American Murder : Family next door)

Before You Watch

Look only at the thumbnail and title.

  • What are your expectations for the documentary?

  • What are the connotations of the image, font, colour, or title?

  • What do you expect to see or hear in the opening?

1. Judging from this thumbnail of the video i see a family house with flowers laid down infront of their driveway which tells me that an incident happened in this house and people are mourning for this families accident or death and the title said "the american murder which tells

2. the connotations of the image it looks neutral from outside and it gives off a meaning that the murder already happened by looking at the flowers placed infront of the driveway, the text colour on the "American murder" is red which instantly tells the audience that its a murder and its brutal

3. I expected to see a beautiful picture of a family shown in the openings where they are gathered and looking like a loving family, and i also expect to see their neighbours getting interviewed because in the title is says the family next door which tells the audience the their neighbours were the primary witnesses of the tragedy

After You Watch

Who is the target audience?
Why do you think so?

Give one example of each and explain the meaning:

  • Camera:

  • Mise-en-scène:

  • Editing:

  • Sound:

The target audience for this documentary is crime enthusiasts, detectives and viewers that are 18 above and are keen to real life crime cases. Because in this documentary it is shown graphic content and for the crime enthusiasts it also includes police officers and mysteries that is involved

1. Cameras that are used in this documentary is a handheld camera, this was used to show realism

2, The Mise-en-scene for this is definitely dark and emotional,  as we can see in the opening it is shown a beautiful family that has been involved in a tragedy making the audience feel bad for them for whats happening to them

3. the sounds they were using were intense building up music to create suspense to the audience making them feel uncomfortable of the tragedy and also hooked.

Would you continue watching?

Why/Why not?

Yes, i would continue watching this documentary because firstly i love crime documentaries and i want to know who really died and what really happened to the family since in the opening it was vague

Documentary Opening 2: (GONE GIRLS)

Before You Watch

Look only at the thumbnail and title.

  • What are your expectations for the documentary?

  • What are the connotations of the image, font, colour, or title?

  • What do you expect to see or hear in the opening?

1. By looking at this the thumbnail of this documentary i expect pedophilia involved in the tragedy because it was showing an old man in his 50s to 60s and the title being called "GONE GIRLS the long island serial killer" which means that he goes for teenage girls and kills them

2. The image shows a blurry low quality cctv footage of an old man wearing glasses and next to it is titled the long island serial killer which mainly tells the audiences that not every old man is innocent and friendly

3. I expect to see images of the young beautiful girls pictured with their family or friends on a trip since the title is "LONG ISLAND" which can mean that they were missing on a girls trip because the title also says GONE GIRLS.

After You Watch

Who is the target audience?
Why do you think so?

Give one example of each and explain the meaning:

  • Camera:

  • Mise-en-scène:

  • Editing:

  • Sound:

The target audience for this documentary is True crime fans that are not just focused on the killer but focused on their family and the backstory of the victims and how it led them to this tragedy

1. The camera that was used was a POV shot, this can put a sense of realism to the audiences and also it can make them feel uncomfortable as it feels like their in the crime scene with the victims

2. tbe Mise-en-scene that was shown is a low lit dark rooms and low lit neigbourhoods and cities which indicates that this neighbourhood can be dangerous at night and should be avoided to go out at all costs

3. the editing is a cut edit from her being in the house to her running for her life outside while a car was chasing her, and this can make the audience feel suspense because the killer is chasing over an innocent girl

4, the sound that was heard from this documentary is 911 calls that were reported during the tragedy and all of the 911 calls were about the killer chasing after the young teenage girl, and one of them was reported because the girl was trying to get in a strangers house because she felt that she was in danger, these 911 calls can put a disturbed feeling to the audience because all of the reported calls were about the girl being chased.

Would you continue watching?

Why/Why not?

No, i wouldn't continue watching because for the most part i already know what the man looks like and what age the killer is, in my opinion the whole plot of this documentary was already spoiled from the thumbnail making it too obvious so i am not interested in continiung to watch this documentary

Documentary Opening 3: (A Deadly American Marriage)

Before You Watch

Look only at the thumbnail and title.

  • What are your expectations for the documentary?

  • What are the connotations of the image, font, colour, or title?

  • What do you expect to see or hear in the opening?

1. From what i view from the thumbnail it looks like a vintage picture of a couple in their marriage day taking a picture, and from the title it says a deadly american marriage, i feel like one of them is going to die besides the thumbnail looking like they are a perfect match and both of them smiling shows that they are happy married couples, but i expect that its gonna end up really toxic with a lot of arguing and shouting and most definitely assault and abuse judging from the title.

2. The picture connotates a happy couple who just got married and ready to start a little family, but from the picture it shows the man smiling with all his teeth while the bride looks slightly unpleasent that they are getting married, which gives off an expectation that the husband is going to be the one end up dead with the bride as the prime suspect of the murder. The title of this documentary completely gives off a different meaning compared to the image that is shown, this title makes us think that they weren't actually a happy couple, instead they had a toxic abusive relationship

3. in the opening i expect to see snapshots of their wedding day pictures of them looking happy and ready to start a new journey in their life, i also expect some of their important people in the wedding such as their family, best man, flower girl to be interviewed about how they looked when they were getting married and their mutual feelings.

Who is the target audience?
Why do you think so?

Give one example of each and explain the meaning:

  • Camera:

  • Mise-en-scène:

  • Editing:

  • Sound:

the target audience might be newly married couples and emotionally traumatized married couples because these married couples need to really know their partner before getting married because you might not know what happens after getting married

1. The cameras that were used in this documentary was firstly a close up shots of the people who were being interviewed and this was used to show their emotions and feelings when being interviewed. This documentary was also using a medium shot to show their body language in the interviews giving them a more expressive conversation. Lastly the also showed drone shots of the neighbourhood they live in and this was used to give off a meaning that they live in a quiet surrounding.

2. The mise-en-scene of this documentary is firstly the lighting on each snapshots were dark and showed off blood everywhere, this can indicate that it was gory and violent, and the rooms and the interior of the houses was a mess indicating there was a real struggle between the wife the husband and the womans dad. They were also showing blurry real life footages and this indicates realism and that they were being recorded along the way making it look like a big crime scene.

3. The editing that was used is the snapshots of each photos that were taken in the tragedy and it was fast and flickery showing that there were lots of evidence that showed that the crime scene isnt small whatsoever.

4. the sounds that were used in the very first seconds were sorrowful music and they showed their kids already becoming a teenager, this can give off a feeling to the audience such as feeling bad for the victims kids.

Would you continue watching?

Why/Why not?

Yes, i would continue watching because i really want to know who actually was the killer and who attacked first, this is very interesting because in the opening it is like a cliff hanger where the detective left off a question that made me feel curious, so yes i would continue watching this documentary

Documentary Opening 4: (The American Manhunt, The Boston Marathon Bombing)

Before You Watch

Look only at the thumbnail and title.

  • What are your expectations for the documentary?

  • What are the connotations of the image, font, colour, or title?

  • What do you expect to see or hear in the opening?

1. My expectations from looking at the thumbnail, i feel like there was a marathon that went disastrous that killed off a big amount of people and injured many, and in the image it was shown alot of smoke which can mean it came from the bombs or the buildings, Since the bomb went off in a marathon according to the title i expect the whole country of USA to be involved in this tragedy, i expect this to be a big crime because it is also shown in the text "The American Manhunt" and this means that the whole USA is hunting down the people who did the bombings that killed many people

2. the connotations that were shown was it was done mid day so i felt like the terrorists were trying to get as much crowd as they can so they could kill many people, the buildings in the image was destroyed which can connotate that the bombing was big and affected alot of people and buildings as we see people crowding and panicking in the crowds.

3. i expect to see the people affected in the marathon bombing to be interviewed to see what they were feeling before the bombing happened and after. and since the title says American manhunt i also expect to see some of the top lawyers, presidents, governments being concerned in this terrorist attack.

After You Watch

Who is the target audience?
Why do you think so?

Give one example of each and explain the meaning:

  • Camera:

  • Mise-en-scène:

  • Editing:

  • Sound:

1. I think that the target audience would be crime enthusiasts and people who are interested in a historic tragedy, because the boston marathon bombing was a big crime and it shows the real victims and real killers and real footages, this tragedy was historical and its remembered in USA and there is memorials of it

2. the camera angles that were used is handheld real life footages of the tragedy happening in real time and this can immerse the audience making them feel like they are there with the people who were in the place where the bombing happened and it can also create realism

3. the editing that was used was including real time footages to create a sense of realism and authenticity, and the other that was used is fast paced cuts to make the audience process the information fast because it was a big crime with lots of evidence and information

4. the sounds that were used in this documentary was discordant music while the real life footages was playing and this can give off a sense of suspense to the audience and making them thrilled and on their toes.

Would you continue watching?

Why/Why not?

Yes i would continue watching this documentary because i want to see the motive behind these bombings because terrorist attacks always have different motives especially if it affects a whole country

Documentary Opening 5: (attack on london hunting 717 bombers)

Before You Watch

Look only at the thumbnail and title.

  • What are your expectations for the documentary?

  • What are the connotations of the image, font, colour, or title?

  • What do you expect to see or hear in the opening?

1. judging from the thumbnail of this documentary, it was shown a a danger sign of multiple underground stations, i expect this documentary to be a terrorist attack or bombing on these underground train stations. the title also says Attack on london which means that the bombing took place in london underground train stations.

2. the connotations especially the danger signs that were shown in the thumbnail were giving a sense of danger on the locations that were mentioned in the map that is shown in the image, this can give a feeling of thrill to the audience because they want to know what really happened in these train stations

3. i expect to see terrorists walking around train stations with mysterious clothing or clothing that cover most of their body parts. i also expect big explosions and people getting hurt since its a bombing that happen underground which can hurt alot of people because they are packed and together underground

After You Watch

Who is the target audience?
Why do you think so?

Give one example of each and explain the meaning:

  • Camera:

  • Mise-en-scène:

  • Editing:

  • Sound:

1. the target audience for this documentary is crime enthusiasts and also people who are interested in historical events, because definitely this news was really a big thing and it turned out to be historical

1. the camera angles that were used in this documentary was the first one is a low angle shot of the terrorist and this can show that they were in control and powerful and ready to murder many people in the train stations. they also showed a close up shots of the important people or people that were affected in this tragedy when being interviewed as this shows their raw emotions and feelings.

2. the mise-en-scene that were shown is a crowded train station which can show that london had a busy morning indicating everyone was out to go to work. the documentary also showed real life cctv footages of the suicide bombers walking in the train station which gives off realism feeling to the audience and this was shown more to proof.

3. the editing that were used in this documentary is cross cutting where it showed different locations and perspectives of where the suicide bombers went and this can build momentum and suspense on where they're about to go bomb

4. the sound that were used in this documentary was a build up suspense music to create a sense of thrill to the audience making them feel scared or now being more aware of crowded places.

Would you continue watching?

Why/Why not?

i wouldnt continue watching because the suicide bombers already died so i dont really get to see their motives on why they bombed london underground train stations and usually it gets cliche when the documentary knows who the bomber is and when they already died.
